Yield to His Spirit

Let me make something very clear: it is always better to receive healing, financial blessing, or whatever we need by revelation of the Word and our faith in the Word. Whatever you and I receive by revelation and faith in God’s Word, we will not lose later. But the truth is, each of us only knows in part. None of us has revelation on every part of the Word. I am constantly searching out the Word, meditating on it and receiving new revelation every day that sets me “freer” than I was the day before. But there will be times in our lives when our knowledge of the Word, not the Word, is not enough to provide us the victory we need because we only know in part.

Whenever I experience this, I focus on two things. First, I spend more time in the Word to receive the revelation I need to put me over. Second, I realize I have the gifts of the Spirit available to me and consciously yield to Him.

There have been numerous times in my walk with the Lord when I faced a situation either my knowledge of the Word or experience was not enough to help me. As I would pray in the Spirit, invariably I would receive a word of knowledge, a word of wisdom, or a Scripture verse that was exactly what I needed.

Several years ago, my wife and I invited two couples to our home for a meal and fellowship. One of the couples, Hal and Bobbie was from Ohio. After the meal, they were sharing with Janice and me and the other couple about the problems they had been having since attending Bible college. They were behind on their tuition payments because a financial commitment back home had not yet come through. They were a blended family and hadn’t heard from Bobbie’s twenty-year-old daughter in two years. 

Then their five-year-old son had been suffering from severe ear infections that kept him up at night. Up to that point the doctors had not been able to find anything to relieve his pain or help him overcome these infections. The other couple and Janice and I shared an abundance of Scriptures with them in an attempt to build their faith and encourage them. We also prayed for them, but the reality was they left more discouraged than when they arrived.

After they left, Janice and I spent time praying in the Spirit together for Hal and Bobbie. While we were praying for them I had three visions. The first was a large metal anvil or wedge that was in Bobbie’s arm creating a large, open wound. The second was a little ghost-like creature that looked like Casper the friendly ghost carrying an open medical bag filled with various vials of viruses and bacterial infections. The third was a picture of Hal with handcuffs and chains on his hands. 

Instantly I knew by the Spirit these were three different evil spirits that had been assigned to them and attacking them. I knew the anvil and open wound in the arm had to do with the hurt and pain between Bobbie and her daughter. I knew the ghost with the vials of infections had to do with their son’s ear infections. I also knew the chains had to do with Hal and Bobbie’s financial situation. I called Hal the next day and asked if I could meet with him and Bobbie.

I met them at their home, shared this with them and encouraged Hal to take authority over these three spirits. He did and Bobbie and I agreed with him. The results were amazing. That night their son slept all night with no pain for the first time in weeks. Two days later Bobbie’s daughter called her and they reconciled. One week later the financial commitment that had been promised to them came through and was more than enough to pay their tuition and meet their needs. Praise God! These victories did not come by my great teaching ability but by the gifts of the word of knowledge and discerning of spirits and taking authority over those demonic spirits attacking them. 

I was able to recognize, cooperate with, and operate in these gifts because I had been taught about them and seen them demonstrated in the two Spirit-filled churches I had been a member of just a few years prior to this event. How will you, your friends, or loved ones know to access the gifts of the Spirit when they “hit the wall” in their lives if they never see it demonstrated or taught in a public setting? 

Paul told the church at Corinth they came behind in no gift, see First Corinthians 1:7. The reality in the spiritual lives of many Christians today is they come behind in most of the gifts. In fact, many Christians don’t even know what each of the nine gifts of the Spirit are, much less how they operate.

The gifts of the Spirit (1 Corinthians 12-14) are weapons available to us when we have done all we know to do from the Word and we have not yet received a breakthrough. Or…when we have shared all we know to share with someone who needs help and the person didn’t receive it, understand it, or experience any change. Or…when someone needs healing, a miracle, a financial or relational breakthrough, and the person doesn’t have the time or emotional or mental capacity to get the revelation they need from the Word first. 

Pursuing this quest of learning to flow in the supernatural will cause you to be filled with God’s presence, receive fresh revelation of Jesus, and powerful ministry opportunities. You will discover wonderful gifts available to you that you may have only seen or heard of but not yet experienced firsthand. You will also learn how to operate them in confidence and biblical order—the way they were intended to function.
